Laura's track becoming more certain, top-end intensity still a question

Laura’s track becoming more certain, top-end intensity still a question

Nick Lilja Wednesday, August 26, 2020 // 8:45 am | 1 Response

Hurricane Laura is now a cAtegory 3 Hurricane. According to the Saffir-Simpson scale, “Devastating damage will occur: Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and gable ends. Many trees will be snapped or uprooted, blocking numerous roads. Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes.” Here is a… Read more →

8/25/20 Early AM Tropics update: Breaking down Laura’s path north

Nick Lilja Tuesday, August 25, 2020 // 1:06 am

I wanted to take some time to lay out some scenarios for everyone as it relates to Laura’s path. While the path is going to determine the strength and vice-versa, and we can estimate some things from the eventual path, this breakdown isn’t going to focus on intensity as much as “where” this storm may go – and why. And… Read more →

8/24/20 Midday Tropics overview: Marco & Laura

Nick Lilja Monday, August 24, 2020 // 11:26 am

Here is just a quick update on how things are stacking up out in the Tropics right now: Marco is producing heavy rains across parts of the Florida panhandle and Alabama as the center of the storm continues to mosey north. Laura is pounding Cuba with heavy rain, too, as it moves west-northwest. Marco’s forward motion has slowed to just… Read more →

8/24/20 Early AM Tropics Update: Marco getting beat up, Laura cruising easy

Nick Lilja Monday, August 24, 2020 // 1:53 am

Really, on any other year, it would be the opposite. Marco, moving through the central gulf would be “cruising easy” and Laura would be the one getting “beat up” by the mountains of Cuba. But it is 2020. So nothing makes sense. As Marco nears the central Gulf Coast, it is getting torn apart by wind shear. As Laura moves… Read more →

Hurricane Marco continues northward while TS Laura forecast shifts again

Hurricane Marco continues northward while TS Laura forecast shifts again

Nick Lilja Sunday, August 23, 2020 // 11:36 am | 1 Response

As anticipated, Tropical Storm Marco continues to move north toward the central Gulf Coast. People in Louisiana and Mississippi will need to continue to monitor forecasts closely. Tropical Storm Laura, also somewhat anticipated, is now looking more and more like a Louisiana and Texas threat than a Florida and Alabama concern. Mississippi isn’t completely out of the woods just yet… Read more →
