WMO retires names Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate

Nick Lilja Thursday, April 12, 2018 // 7:43 am

The World Meteorological Organization decided to retire four names from the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Three of the names probably make perfect sense, but the fourth might seem like a bit of a mystery. Harvey, Irma, Maria – three of the Top 15 strongest hurricanes the Atlantic basin has seen in at least 10 years may seem like shoe-ins for… Read more →

Early Look: Saturday’s severe weather threat for southeastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and Alabama

Nick Lilja Wednesday, April 11, 2018 // 10:58 am | 2 Responses

Severe weather is back in the forecast. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted the area with a 15-percent risk for severe weather. That would translate to a Slight Risk, or a two out of five, on their one-to-five scale where five is the most severe. This weekend is a big deal. I’ve heard from – at least – a dozen… Read more →

Even places like Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma will be getting in on the chance for bad weather this go around, too. From the Storm Prediction Center: Widely scattered to scattered thunderstorms are evident from eastern… Read more →

Gulf Coast faces severe weather threat; possible flooding

Nick Lilja Thursday, April 5, 2018 // 11:53 pm

As the next round of thunderstorms swings through parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, the risk for severe weather continues. From the Storm Prediction Center: The convective line may initially be slow to organize but strengthening mid-level northwesterly flow as well as increasing low-level flow will act to enhance vertical shear, encouraging upscale growth into a well organized MCS. Anticipated… Read more →

It isn’t just a feeling: Spring is getting longer, pollen getting worse

Nick Lilja Wednesday, April 4, 2018 // 9:10 pm | 4 Responses

I want to start off with a little story… I had someone mention to me the other day, “Spring feels like it comes earlier, anymore. What do you think? Is there any weather information to back that up?” They went on to mention that they used to wait until mid- to late-April to plant, but now they put plants in… Read more →
