Internship:

The [Five] Sides – Spring/Summer Internship

The [Five] Sides, http://thefivesides.com, is a small but successful online sports journal started in 2005. We have about a dozen staff writers and about more than a dozen special contributors. We focus on offering multiple perspectives on sports news and also analyzing what that news means to teams, players and fans. We take a different approach to sports news because you can find a headline anywhere, but you can find the story here.

Right now, we are looking for a few interns to add to our team.

Description:

Our internship program allows students to experience first-hand the reality of working in the new world of sports journalism. Interns will work with new media, social media, video, audio and text. Interns can test their creative talent, exercise their analytical skills and increase their understanding of new media diversification and trends. Internships are a often 5-15 hours per week, with specific days agreed upon in advance.

Interns need to be enrolled in a college or university but don’t need to be receiving college credit to be eligible. Also, recently graduated seniors (within one year of graduation) are also eligible. Students are expected to obtain and complete any forms necessary to receive credit for the internship experience.

Responsibilities / Duties:

This is a remote internship. You can do this from your college or hometown – in fact, we prefer it that way. We want YOU to report on YOUR school’s / city’s (or the one closest by) sports news. Live in near College Station, TX? Spending your time outside Bowling Green, KY? Or are you in Wilmington, NC?

Interns will NOT edit stories for hours on end, rewrite pointless wire copy, or get coffee for ANYONE on the staff.

This is a hands on internship and most interns cover college athletics. Interns WILL report on (a minimum) 1-3 stories per week while using social media to spread the word that they’ve got the most in-depth coverage. They will help brainstorm story ideas, make the contacts on the story, interview, write and publish the story with their name in the byline on the site. There will be an opportunity to also add audio and video to posts – interns are allowed, if they have the proper equipment / software, to be as creative as possible.

Skilled interns with past experience will even be given “carte blanche” to write columns and opinion pieces and may even receive their own blog.

If this is something that interests you, email Nick Lilja at nicklilja (at) thefivesides.com your succinct, well-written cover letter – resume not necessary – with links to three clips / audio interviews / TV news packages / podcasts / funny tweets.

Responsibilities / Duties:

The Social Media Intern will assist in our twitter activity. The SMI would be responsible for communicating with the twitterverse about all things sports. No joke. The only duties involved with this internship are hanging out on twitter for a few hours every night and tweeting, retweeting with followers and others about sports.

Again, we repeat, get credit for hanging out and talking about sports on Twitter.
