MLS Super Draft: Portland trades Kenny Cooper to New York

After drafting Andrew Jean-Baptiste eigth overall in teh 2012 MLS SuperDraft, the Portland Timbers traded forward Kenny Cooper to the New York Red Bulls.

Cooper – who was touted as the “face of the franchise” in Portland was sent packing for a first-round pick in the 2013 draft and allocation money.

Timbers owner Merritt Paulson tweeted:

“I want to thank Kenny for being a first class person and professional. I wish him the best #rctid”

Cooper scored eight goals and tallied two assists last season.

He was originally an All-Star with FC Dallas. He’s scored 48 goals in 124 career regular-season MLS games. Cooper came to the Timbers after a stint in Europe where he battled multiple injuries.

Portland also selected Brendan King in the second round of Thursday’s draft.
