Iona basketball coach Tim Cluess gets extension

Iona College announced Monday that Tim Cluess, head coach of the men’s basketball program, has signed a multi-year contraction extension.

The contract will be retroactive – effective January 1, 2012. It will run through June 30, 2017.

“Coach Cluess not only has a proven track record of success throughout his 21-year coaching career but, more importantly, he is also a man of the highest character and integrity consistent with the vision of Iona College,” Iona College President Joseph E. Nyre said on the Iona website. “I am grateful to our loyal alumni whose support ensures the sustenance and excellence of Iona athletics.”

Cluess has been on the job for two years and led the Gaels to a 25-12 mark in his first season. Iona is 17-5 this season with a 9-2 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to build on the development of our program in conjunction with Iona’s long-term vision,” Cluess told icgaels.com. “The ability to lead these fine student-athletes as we fight for a MAAC championship and NCAA Tournament bid each year is a challenge that I wholeheartedly look forward to today, and for seasons to come.”

Cluess reached 40 wins at Iona in 56 games, making him the third fastest to reach that mark with the Gaels.
