A trip down I-81: Syracuse basketball vs. Binghamton basketball

Living in the shadow of the Syracuse Orange basketball team is tough. The 18-0 Orange are riding a hotstreak that shows no sign of cooling down. The Orange seem to be playing to the weather. The “balmy” temperatures have kept Syracuse relatively snow-free this winter.

Perhaps some of that heat in the gym is effecting the climate.

Sadly, though, that heat isn’t effecting the team living in their shadow.

A two-hour drive south of Syracuse is another city known for cold and brutal winters. Only their team isn’t heating up the gym.

In fact, its not even at room temperature.

Simply put, the Binghamton Bearcats continue to struggle.

The Bearcats are the antithesis of what the Orange represent. The Bearcats are 0-16 with an RPI of 344.

As opposed to being first, they are next to last.

The Orange suit up five seniors, five juniors and a handful of sophomores. The Bearcats don’t even have a senior on the team.

Binghamton coach Mark Macon is disappointed, but not surprised by the struggles. The team lost three starters – two of which were captains – from last season. And that team only won eight games.

Something The Syracuse Orange accomplished by the second day in December this season.

Perhaps the best barometer for how much these teams differ – similar opponents.

Both teams played Colgate this season. Binghamton lost by four. Syracuse won by more than 40.

It’s amazing how much difference a two-hour drive can make.
