Green Bay Packers preseason standout Chastin West signs with Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed wide receiver Chastin West to a contract and waived rookie wide receiver Jamar Newsome Tuesday

West was signed off the Green Bay Packers practice squad. The Jaguars must add him to the 53-man roster per league rules.

The 6-foot-1, 214 pound West joined the Packers as an undrafted rookie in 2010 and spent the entire season on the club’s practice squad. He led the Packers in the 2011 preseason with eight receptions for 153 yards. He was waived in final cuts and was later signed to the practice squad.

According to the Jaguars website, West might see playing time Sunday at Carolina.

Two of the team’s wide receivers Jason Hill (hip) and Kassim Osgood (hamstring) are currently recovering from injuries, and it’s unclear whether they will be ready.

West might be the deep threat the team needs to stretch opposing defenses. Recall, West had a 97-yard touchdown reception against Arizona in week two of the preseason.

A native of Moorpark, Calif., West was a three-year letterman at Fresno State as a wide receiver and return specialist. He finished his career with six touchdowns on 79 receptions and had three returns for scores. He starred in football and track at Moorpark High School and was the first player in school history to get a Division I-A scholarship offer.

West will wear jersey number 17.
