Weather stops Falcons scrimmage

The Atlanta Falcons tradition of playing a scrimmage at a local high school was cut short Friday night due to inclement weather. The team did manage to practice for an hour at Norcross High School, though.

An approaching thunderstorm cut practice short before the 11-on-11 scrimmage. The near-capacity crowd of 13,500 did get to see the team warm up and run through drills before the practice ended.

Per The Associated Press:

It’s been the Falcons’ custom the last several years to hold a scrimmage at a nearby suburban high school the week before the first preseason game. Friday’s session lasted less than an hour. Nearby lightning, a sudden drop in temperature and dark skies caused coach Mike Smith to stop practice.

The original plan for the scrimmage was for opening-series drives, third-down scenarios, one-on-one pass drills, red-zone offense. Plus a 20-play scrimmage between reserves.
