Cincinnati Bengals RB Cedric Benson begins serving jail time

The Bengals No. 1 running back, Cedric Benson, won’t be playing for the first regular season matchup. In fact, the powerful seventh-year pro won’t even be on the sidelines.

He’ll be in a jail cell. Not exactly the way the Cincinnati Bengals were hoping to start the regular season.

Benson started serving his 20-day jail term late Tuesday night in Texas to settle two misdemeanor assault cases. One for allegedly punching a bar employee and another when he allegedly punched an ex-roomate. He plead no contest to both charges.

The former University of Texas standout was sentenced Monday in Austin.

Originally, he planned to surrender Oct. 17, during Cincinnati’s bye week. (editorial note: what it must be like to feel like you have the convenience to surrender to police when you were ready and willing)

It’s not a complete 20-day wash for the team of for Benson, though. His time could be reduced for time already served from when he was originally arrested.
