Mike Vick supports bill to dissuade dog fighting spectators

Cramped in a small room, the President of the Humane Society, two Reps., Tom Marino and Betty Sutton, and Mike Vick spoke out against dog fighting spectators.

Vick said keeping children out of the culture of dogfighting is most important.

“Too many kids get involved in dogfighting, and it’s time to break this cycle,” Vick said. “Animal fighting is a dead-end road for the young men, and there’s nothing but terrible outcomes for the dogs placed in a pit to fight.”

The bill, H.R. 2492, titled, Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act of 2011, would make it a federal crime to attend a dogfight or cockfight.

Vick was helping support the bill saying that holding spectators accountable will help dissuade fights from occurring.

“Since my case came to light, the laws against animal fighting have been upgraded,” Vick said. “And here’s another opportunity to strengthen the law and establish an even stronger deterrent.”

There were roughly 40 media members in attendance. The main sponsors of the legislation are Reps. Jim Moran, D-Va., Sutton, D-Ohio and Marino, R-Pa.
