Alomar enshrined in Hall

He’s only the third Puetro Rican to stand on this stage. He’s only the third Puerto Rican to speak into the microphone. He’s only the third Puetro Rican to smile for these cameras.

Roberto Alomar is also the third Puerto Rican to stand before a cheering crowd. And he might be the best of them all.

Speaking first in his native language, Spanish, Alomar said he felt proud to be a Puerto Rican.

“I always played for my island,” Alomar said, “It is a true blessing to be able to share this moment with all of you. I have you in my heart. I am standing here today because of the fan support.

“To my family, to my fans, to all the Puerto Rican people … and the game of baseball, you are and will always be my life and my love.”

Alomar belongs in the Hall. He was respected for his glove and his bat. He finished his career as a .300 hitter, was a 12-time All-Star and a 10-time Gold Glove winner.

He is also the first Toronto Blue Jays player to be inducted. The 20th second baseman.

“I did not know how nervous I would be,” Alomar said. “Suddenly, I feel speechless.”

The governor of Puerto Rico, Luis Fortuno, took a moment to congratulate Alomar, according to The Associated Press. Fortuno said Alomar’s induction was “an honor for all Puerto Ricans.”
