Looking to save a few bucks, try Linux Mint 11

Alright dorks, dweebs, nerds and geeks, I’m not talking to you. You guys have already manipulated the source code of Mint to sidestep all of the cool things we “regalar” folks like.

Nope, I’m talking to the jocks, soccer moms, grandparents and cheap-skates. Maybe even the gadget dorks who don’t know anything about code. The people who don’t have time to learn something new or don’t have the money to buy something that just plain old works.

So, I say, if you are planning on buying a computer soon AND if you fall into either category above, listen up – Linux Mint is your next operating system.

It can do everything your Windows or Mac computer can do. Now when I say your computer I do mean the people I’m talking to: grandparents, soccer moms and jocks. Again, I’m not tlaking to any Mac Freaks or Windows Network Administrators.

I can play MP3s, MPEG video even .mov files. I can burn CDs for the car and I’ve made a handful of DVDs of home movies to give to family members.

I even cut my Official Demo Reel on it.

I browse the web, play youtube clips and stream live video of NCAA baseball games – simultaneously. I connect my computer to my 42″ Panasonic with ease via an HDMI port and get video AND sound. Something I cant even do with the Windows partition of the same computer!

It’s pleasing to look at, too! Not that it’s incredibly important, but the current default theme is a brushed aluminum look and it’s pretty cool.

Everything I connect it identifies and automatically downloads drivers to use. I currently have the following plugged in: Kodak PlayTouch camera, Samsung Moment Android Phone, external hard drive, wireless mouse and Olympus sound recorder. Oh, and my bluetooth headset.

But enough about me. Let’s talk about YOU. Linux Mint can be installed on your current desktop to run along side your current OS (for you PC folk). Or you could always upgrade!

A lot of people might balk at the thought of buying a new computer but
right now on Tiger Direct
you can find “barebones” computers for cheap. Often times they are simply lacking an operating system. This one is about $300.

And there is a method to my madness, here. Promise. That post will be tomorrow.. stick around.
