Daisuke Matsuzaka out for the season

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka will miss the remainder of the 2011 season.

Matsuzaka will undergo Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow sometime next week. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum.

The injury could mark the end of Matsuzaka’s tenure in Boston. The Red Sox have invested $103 million in the pitcher. Boston paid $51 million in a posting fee to Japan’s Seibu Lions for Dice-K’s rights and the signed the pitcher to a 6-year $52 million deal.

After having success in his first two seasons in Boston, Matsuzaka has struggled mightily since 2008. He was just 3-3 with a 5.30 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 26/23 K/BB ratio this season. The Red Sox placed the struggling right-hander on the 15-day DL last month with an elbow sprain.

Tommy John surgery generally requires over a year for recovery.
