Cal baseball overcomes budget issues to make College World Series

California baseball can only be described as storybook. The season started with the team facing elimination due to budget issues and might end hoisting the College World Series trophy.

Before the season, former California baseball player Doug Nickle claimed his group “Save Cal Sports” raised between $12 million and $15 million to save the program.

The final numbers ended up closer to $9 million, but it was still enough.

He may have done more than just raised money – he raised the player’s spirits, too. And after an unbelievable run through the NCAA tournament, the Bears are in the College World Series for the first time since 1992.

They open play Sunday against top-seeded Virginia and are looking to win their third World Series in school history and first since 1957.
