Eugene Emeralds take back-to-back games from Volcanoes

KEISER, Ore – The Emeralds 2011 first round pick second baseman Cory Spangenberg continues to show why he was selected with the 10th overall pick in this years draft.

Spangenberg helped lead the way for the Emeralds, a farm team for the San Diego Padres, in their second consecutive victory over instate rival Salem-Keiser Volcanoes by the score of 5-2 — extending the Volcanoes losing-streak to six games.

He batted 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a RBI and added his third stolen base of the season, and now leads the Northwest League in on base percentage (.636) and ranks sixth in batting average (.389).

The Emeralds (5-2) starting the scoring off in top of the third inning when Donavan Tate hit a RBI single to right field, which brought teammate Jorge Minyety across to plate from second base.

At the next at-bat Spangenberg would earn a RBI off his third double of the season — scoring Tate. Two at-bats later Eugene would score again off of a RBI single to centerfield by left fielder Kyle Gaedele scoring Spangenberg.

The final run of the inning was scored on a RBI single by right fielder Michael Gallic making the score 4-0 entering the bottom of the inning.

The Volcanoes (1-6), a farm team for the San Francisco Giants, scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Left fielder Shawn Payne led the inning off for Salem-Keiser with a triple to centerfield and would score two at-bats later off of a single by shortstop Joseph Panik.

Eugene would return the favor by responding with a run in the next inning when first baseman Daniel Garce got an RBI on a ground out that scored Tate — who led the inning off with his second triple of the season making the score 5-1.

Salem-Keiser’s first baseman, Brice Cutspec, put the final run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning for either team with a two-out homerun over the right field fence — his second of the year.

The Emeralds and Volcanoes wrap-up the three game series June 24 in Keiser, Ore. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
