New York Yankee Mariano Rivera pitches in 1,000th game

Mariano Rivera is the first pitcher in MLB history to appear in 1,000 games for one team. He trotted out of the bullpen against the Toronto Blue Jays in the ninth inning on Wednesday.

He debuted with the Yankees May 23, 1995. Since that game, he’s pitched in 1170 innings and accumulated 75 wins, 55 losses and 572 saves with an ERA of 2.22.

The Yankee closer is the 15th player to reach 1,000 games with any number of teams. The 41-year-old closer with a wicked-sharp cutter is chasing Goose Gossage, now. Gossage played in 1,002 games. Jesse Orosco is the all-time leader with 1,252 appearances.

Rivera is 1-0 on the season with 13 saves in 2011.
