Phil Jackson is retiring with, no doubt, a bad taste in his mouth. In the 21 seasons he patrolled the sidelines he was never swept in a post-season series.
Until 2011 – in his final season as a head coach.
The Dallas Mavericks swept the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers out of the playoffs, sending the Laker coach into retirement. In his opinion, most likely, a few games too early.
In the game, the Mavs’ Jason Terry tied an NBA playoff record with nine 3-pointers in a 122-86 final. Dallas matched another postseason mark with 20 3-balls.
Jackson announced during the season that this would be his last season on the Lakers’ bench. After the game, Jackson called his career “a wonderful run” and leaves the game as the most successful coach in NBA history.
Brian Shaw, Jackson’s top assistant, is considered the favorite to replace The Zen Master.
