Jim O’Brien hired as Emerson College men’s basketball coach

The former Boston College and Ohio State coach, Jim O’Brien, was named Emerson College’s men’s basketball coach. Division-III basketball coach isn’t always a glamorous job. But O’Brien doesn’t mind.

Or can’t.

The Brooklyn native has been out of college coaching since 2004 when he was fired from his position at Ohio State. He led the Buckeyes to four NCAA tournaments, including one Final Four in 1999.

He left amid a controversy over NCAA rules violations.

Emerson does not offer athletic scholarships.

During the past 12 seasons, Emerson has won two Great Northeast Athletic Conference titles (1998 and 1999) and competed in the championship game six other times, including three of the past five years.
