Gary Williams retires

On Thursday afternoon legendary University of Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams announced his retirement.

In a stunning move, Williams announced he is retiring and leaving the Maryland program. A news conference will be held at 1pm EST Friday at the Comcast Center.

The 66-year old Williams has been a college basketball head coach for the past 33 years. After coaching at American University, Boston College, and Ohio State, Williams spent the last 22 years coaching at his alma mater at Maryland.

Williams won 668 games during his coaching career, including 461 at Maryland. He went to 14 NCAA tournaments, won three ACC regular-season titles and had seven Sweet 16 appearances, two Elite Eights and two Final Fours. Williams won the 2002 NCAA National Championship and was the coach of the year in 2002 and the ACC coach of the year in 2002 and 2010.
