Flyers’ Sergei Bobrovsky to start in Game 4

The goalie carousel continues for the Philadelphia Flyers.

22-year old Sergei Bobrovsky will start in net for the Flyers as they face elimination in their second round series against the Boston Bruins.

Bobrovsky will be making his first start since Game 1 of the Flyers’ first round series against the Buffalo Sabres, a game in which he lost 1-0.

Bobrovsky struggled in his Game 2 start against the Sabres and was pulled in favor of veteran Brian Boucher. One game later he was pulled from the active roster in favor of goaltender Michael Leighton.

After Boucher struggled in Game 5 against the Sabres, it was Leighton and not Bobrovsky who got the start in net for the Flyers in Game 6. Leighton, who spent the entire season in the minor leagues, struggled mightily in Game 6 and was pulled in favor of Boucher. By Game 7, Bobrovsky was active again but playing a backup role to Boucher.

When the Flyers advanced to the second round of the playoffs to take on the Bruins, Boucher got the nod in net. However Bobrovsky has come in relief of Boucher in all three games of the series.

Bobrovsky is 0-1 with a 3.31 goals-against average and 0.875 save percentage this postseason. The rookie goaltender had a strong regular season going 28-13-8 with a 2.59 goals-against average and 0.915 save percentage in 54 games.

He’ll need to be at his best as the Flyers’ attempt to dig out of a 3-0 hole in their best-of-seven series against the Bruins for the second straight season.
