The Philadelphia Flyers have placed goaltender Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers. Leighton could be back with the Orange and Black as early as Wednesday afternoon.
The Flyers placed Leighton on re-entry waivers on Tuesday at noon, giving 29 other clubs a crack at him for half of his $1.55 million salary. The Flyers would be required to pay the other half. Leighton still has one year remaining on the 2-year $2.2 million deal that he signed last summer.
Philadelphia would like to have Leighton available for the playoffs if need be, and re-calling him now would make it easier to have him on the roster. If the Flyers had an injury in the playoffs, even teams not even participating in the postseason would be more likely to place a claim to put the Flyers in a tough spot.
The 29-year old goaltender has posted a 14-12-2 record with a 2.22 goals against-average and .926 save percentage in the AHL since being sent down in December.
Leighton led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals last season where he had an 8-3 record including 3 shutouts in the 2010 playoffs.
Sergei Bobrovsky and Brian Boucher remain ahead of Leighton on the Flyers depth chart as the postseason approaches.
