Ex-Miami Dolphins player, Jim Mandich dies

South Florida has lost a retired player with a recognizable voice. Jim Mandich, who won two Super Bowl rings with the Miami Dolphins and popular radio announcer for the team, died Tuesday.

He was 62.

He was diagnosed with bile-duct cancer in early 2010, according to the team, but continued to work on game broadcasts last season. He was the color commentator for games for the past two decades hosted a radio call-in show. He was still an active member of the team and joined luncheons for the Dolphins Touchdown Club.

“I was sad to hear about Jim’s passing,” Hall of Fame head coach Don Shula told The Associated Press. “I always looked at him as a guy who was bright, well prepared and competitive. He was someone who I could count on as a player and was instrumental in the success we had during his time with the Dolphins.”

Mandich was a tight end for the ’72 Dolphins. He played under Shula from ’70-’77.

He had 121 career receptions, 23 for touchdowns and one voice… that will surely be missed.
