Wizards waive Al Thornton; Golden State Bound

The Washington Wizards have waived forward Al Thornton.

However Thornton won’t remain on the open market for long as he will sign with the Golden State Warriors after clearing waivers on Thursday.

Thornton and the Wizards agreed to a buyout on Tuesday afternoon and the 6’8” forward out of Florida State immediately turned his sights to Golden State.

“The additions of Rashard Lewis and Mo Evans combined with Josh Howard’s return from injury gave us a logjam at the small forward spot,” said Wizards General Manager Ernie Grunfeld. “Coming to terms on a contract buyout with Al was mutually beneficial, as it allows us to clear space in the rotation and allows him the chance to pursue an opportunity with another team.”

Thornton will likely take a reserve role with the Warriors behind Dorell Wright at the forward position. He should fight with Reggie Williams as a reserve scoring option off the bench for Golden State. The team believes he can add a versatile inside-outside presence on the offensive end of the court.

Thornton will be eligible for the Warriors playoff roster because he was waived by the Wizards before Tuesday night’s 11:59pm EST deadline.
