Phillies sign Kevin Frandsen

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed 2nd baseman Kevin Frandsen to a minor-league deal. He will begin the season with the Phillies AAA affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.

Frandsen was recently released by the San Diego Padres and the Phillies moved quickly to bring him into the fold. The 28-year old utility infielder also received interest from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Frandsen has experience playing 2nd base, 3rd base, and shortstop. He batted .250 with 0 home runs and 14 RBIs in 173 plate appearances over 54 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.

Over his 5-year career, Frandsen has hit .243 with a .302 on-base percentage and .335 slugging percentage. His best season came back in 2007 as a member of the San Francisco Giants when he hit .269 with 5 homers and 31 RBIs, including a .331 on-base percentage in 109 games.

With star 2nd baseman Chase Utley sidelined with patellar tendinitis and chondromalacia, Frandsen will join a growing group of players looking to fill the void for the Phillies including Luis Castillo, Wilson Valdez, Michael Martinez, and Pete Orr.
