Purdue retains Matt Painter

Matt Painter will remain the head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers.

Purdue released a statement saying Painter had signed a new 8-year contract to stay.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Painter had been heavily linked to the University of Missouri opening.  He met with Missouri athletic director Mike Alden Tuesday morning in Orlando, Fla., to discuss the Tigers’ opening. While Painter was offered the job but did not say either way at that time whether he’d take it.

The 40-year old Painter has been named the Big Ten’s coach of the year three times and has led the Boilermakers to four straight seasons of 25 or more wins. Purdue (26-8) made it to the third round of this year’s NCAA tournament but was knocked out there by Final Four participant VCU.
