Baseketball player dies after game-winning shot

The Associated Press reported on a sad story out of Western Michigan. A high school basketball player collapsed and died after making the game-winning shot to cap his team’s perfect season.

The player, Wes Leonard, was taken to Holland Hospital where he later died. Holland Hospital spokeswoman, Deb Patterson, said the 16-year-old Fennville High School basketball player’s cause of death has not yet been determined.

The local newspaper, The Holland Sentinel, reported that Leonard scored the game-winning layup for the 57-55 win over Bridgman in overtime. The bucket gave Fennville the final win of a 20-0 season.

Leonard fell to the ground after teammates and fans rushed the court.
