Breaking: Andy Pettitte announces retirement

Andy Pettitte has announced his retirement from baseball.

Pettitte and the Yankees have scheduled a press conference for Friday afternoon to announce the decision according to Yankees Broadcaster Michael Kay. As late as last week Pettitte was still working out in preparation for the 2011 season but he ultimately decided to call it quits.

The lefty finishes with a 240-138 record and 3.88 ERA for his career. His .635 winning percentage was seventh among active pitchers. Pettitte spent 13 of his 16 MLB seasons with the New York Yankees and had a three year stint with Roger Clemens and the Houston Astros.

Last year the All Star went 11-3 with a 3.28 ERA. His retirement creates another hole in a thin Yankees starting rotation and the team will look to fill the void with the minor league signings of Bartolo Colon and Freddie Garcia.
