2012 Olympics chages, fewer preliminary races

The 2012 Olympics may be the fastest ever – two different ways. World-Class sprinters will only need to run two times at this year’s world championships.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, sprinters, like Usain Bolt, had to run four times to win a gold medal, and for Bolt, set world records. Now, instead of running in three “prelims” ahead of each final, sprinters only have to run twice before going for gold.

The IAAF told the Associated Press: “A brand new and modern approach has led to a revamped and revolutionized competition timetable which has been designed in order to reach optimum impact.”

The result is less time waiting on the track and fresher legs in the blocks.

And, perhaps, more world records.
