OJ Mayo suspended 10 games for Steroid Use

Memphis Grizzlies guard OJ Mayo has been suspended 10 games with pay for violating the league’s anti-drug program.

Mayo tested positive for Dedehydroepiandrosterone, a steroid.  DHEA is the same steroid in which former Orlando Magic forward Rashard Lewis was suspended for at the beginning of the 2009-2010 season.

DHEA is available as an over-the-counter supplement.  It is currently banned in all four major sports, however studies have shown it is not effective as a muscle building steroid.

“It was an honest mistake, but I take full responsibility for my actions,” May said in a statement released by the Grizzlies.  “I apologize to my fans, teammates, and the Grizzlies organization for regrettably not doing the necessary research about what supplements I can put in my body.”

Mayo will begin serving his suspension on Friday night as the Grizzlies take on the Philadelphia 76ers.  The 10 game ban will cost him nearly $400,000 in salary.
