The Phillies have found their answer for a left-handed reliever out of the bullpen and they have turned to a familiar friend.
The club has agreed to terms on a contract with relief pitcher JC Romero. Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.
Romero spoke with the media last week and expressed his interest in returning to Philadelphia.
“I’ll tell you, man, Lee going to the Phillies was crazy, real crazy,” said Romero. “Something special might happen in Philly again. I definitely would like to be part of that.”
The door reopened for Romero to return to the Phillies after lefty reliever Dennys Reyes and the club went their separate ways. The team had signed Reyes to a 1-year $1.1 million deal but after the lefty came to Philadelphia for a physical a week later, the two sides parted ways.
“Maybe this is a door that opens for me to go back to Philly,” said the 34-year-old Romero last week. “I hope so. My family loves it in Philly. I love it in Philly. I hope it works out and I can be back there. I felt they were closing the door for me when they signed Dennys, but everything happens for a reason.”
Last year, Romero appeared in 36.2 innings for the Phils, striking out 28 and holding opponents to a .222 batting average.
His contract is expected to be for much less than the $4.5 million salary he commanded in 2010.
