Updated BCS Game Predictions

National Championship – Auburn vs. Boise State

Auburn’s offense was extremely impressive in a win against Arkansas; however their defense is still suspect after allowing Arkansas’ backup to move up and down the field on them. However, I expect Auburn to win their matchup against LSU this weekend and then win against Alabama in the Iron Bowl in a shootout on November 26th to wrap up the SEC West (and then beat whoever feels like winning the SEC East). If there is an undefeated SEC team, they are a virtual lock for the national championship, and right now, I think that will be Auburn. Boise State is a great team with the best defense in the country and one of the best offenses. I hate the strength of schedule argument, but I know it affects the public perception. Many teams may be able to go undefeated with Boise State’s schedule, but how many teams do you think could honestly beat Boise State right now? None. Winner: Boise State

Rose Bowl – Oregon vs. Michigan State

I think Oregon will lose at least one game to either USC, Arizona, or Oregon State, but I do expect them to win the Pac-10 and receive the Rose Bowl bid. Michigan State has looked great so far and they only have one tough game left when they go on the road to Iowa October 30th. If they win this game, expect them to go undefeated. However, a weak nonconference schedule will keep them out of the national championship, but their consolation prize will be the Granddaddy of Them All. Winner: Oregon

Orange Bowl – Florida State vs. Iowa

Florida State pulled out another win this weekend against Boston College, however I am not as comfortable with this pick as I was last week with the resurgence of Virginia Tech. Iowa will get the Big Ten’s second BCS invite as an at-large but don’t be surprised if Iowa wins the Big Ten and goes to the Rose Bowl as the schedule lines up favorably for them with Wisconsin (Oct 23rd), Michigan State (Oct 30th), and Ohio State (Nov 27th) all travelling to Iowa City. Winner: Iowa

Fiesta Bowl – Oklahoma vs. TCU

I was quite wrong about Nebraska last week. I guess that is what happens when a young freshman quarterback faces a real defense. With that being said, Oklahoma looks like the Big 12’s best team. However, Oklahoma still has a tough remaining schedule with 4 out of their last 6 games on the road with two of those being at Missouri and at Oklahoma State. For now, Oklahoma looks like the best in the Big 12, so they are the pick, but that could all change in the coming weeks. TCU is still handling business and will continue to do so even though they face Air Force this week and Utah later in the year. Winner: TCU

Sugar Bowl – Alabama vs. West Virginia

After this weekend, I think Auburn will beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa this year, but with my prediction of Auburn going to the national championship, that allows the Sugar Bowl committee the first pick of the BCS schools. What’s a better choice than the defending national champion Alabama and Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram? West Virginia will win the Big East and they must land in a BCS bowl game somewhere. For now, I think that will be Sugar Bowl. Winner: Alabama
