 Updated BCS Game Predictions

National Championship – Alabama vs. Ohio State

This weekend, Alabama once again proved why it’s the number one team in the land. While the offense experienced sputtered a little bit with interceptions, the defending Heisman Trophy winner showed why he still deserves to be in the conversation and the Alabama defensive backfield, while young, showed how talented they are. Ohio State this weekend destroyed another terrible team, thereby proving that they’ve only beaten one legitimate team this year in Miami. However, nobody seems to be a clear number 2 except for them. Winner: Alabama

Rose Bowl – Oregon vs. Boise State

Oregon’s previously number one defense gave up nearly 600 yards to Arizona State, but was able to force turnovers and win the game. This shows that Oregon is not invincible as some thought as they pummeled patsies, and we should know the clear favorite for the Pac-10 after this weekend when Stanford ventures to Eugene. Once again, as I noted before, if the Big 10 champ is in the National Championship game and there is qualifying non-AQ school, then the Rose Bowl must take them. So far this could be either Boise State or TCU, but after defeating Oregon State, it looks like Boise State will only have one more test left when they face Nevada in conference play.  Winner: Boise State

Orange Bowl – Miami vs. West Virginia

Miami manhandled Pittsburgh last Thursday. Is the Big East really this bad? The pick here is still the ACC Champ vs. the Big East Champ. It looks like Miami might have some competition in North Carolina State, but I still see Miami easily winning this conference. As for the Big East, even though they also lost this weekend, I’ll have to keep West Virginia as the pick here because they were within one touchdown against LSU in Baton Rouge and their defense completely shutdown the LSU offense. Winner: Miami

Fiesta Bowl – Nebraska vs. Stanford

Nebraska scraped by South Dakota State in their win, but I still believe they are the best in the conference, especially after Texas looked terrible and Oklahoma escaped with a 2 point victory against a team that was thought to be rebuilding in Cincinnati. Last week I thought the Big Ten would get an extra BCS invite, however, with how well Stanford is playing, I could see the Glendale bowl wanting to pick a team that is closer to home. Stanford’s offense against Nebraska’s defense would be very interesting.   Winner: Nebraska

Sugar Bowl – Florida vs. Oklahoma

So much for my bold prediction last week of picking South Carolina to win the SEC East as they go and lose to Auburn. Due to this defeat, I am going to revert to my old prediction and select Florida to be picked for the Sugar Bowl. In addition, I would expect the Sugar Bowl to want to pickup the loser from the Big 12 conference title game, and after Texas looked terrible, I guess I’ll pick Oklahoma. However, after the Red River Shootout this weekend, we’ll have a better picture of who will be the Big 12 South winner.  Winner: Florida

Top Heisman Candidates

  1. Denard Robinson, QB, Michigan
  2. Terrelle Pryor, QB, Ohio State
  3. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State
  4. Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
  5. Cameron Newton, QB, Auburn
  6. Daniel Thomas, RB, Kansas State
  7. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
  8. Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
  9. Kendall Hunter, RB, Oklahoma State
  10. Russell Wilson, QB, North Carolina State

  1. Great breakdown again Colt. I’ve been back every week. I see you have an OSU hat on. How do you feel about the game?

  3. I feel terrible about the OSU-BSU game as a fan. The BSU offense and defense tore the beavers apart, but I expected a much bigger victory.

Bruce – After watching the BSU game, I didn’t see them as a top 2 team anymore. A top 2 team doesn’t make as many dumb mistakes as the Broncos did with all the personal foul penalties on their home field. When going against an offense and a defense that is one of the worst in college football (the Beavers), I expected more from the Broncos. Even though Ohio State hasn’t really played anyone (other than Miami), I would expect Ohio State to win if they were to play Boise State on a neutral field. Based on that, I had to rank them ahead of the Broncos.
