Working for ESPN

I feel a deep connection to everyone who visits this site – now that this site is down to a dwindling dozen readers.

I feel like I know every single one of you because, in all reality, I do.

Tomorrow, Monday, September, 22, I go to work for ESPN. Nothing big, just some grunt work, but hey it’s a start. How many people can say they have worked with ESPN? In fact, I think I’m just going to start dropping that into every conversation.

How was my day? I worked for ESPN. What did you do last week? I Worked for ESPN. What sounds good for dinner? Anywhere ESPN is being broadcasted – gotta’ watch my favorite employer.

In fact, every time the phone rings I’ll answer, “Hello, Nick Lilja, ESPN.”

What my title, you ask. Well, some call me the Utility Player for ESPN – I can do it all. I can host the pre-game, run the audio/video board, be a sideline huge mic guy or even the technical producer.

But for this game, Oregon State Vs. USC, they want me doing something far more important – stringing the cable for the “SkyCam.” It’s a very important position.

Forget the fact that my job is lower than the lowest available position at the “World Wide Leader.” Forget that I’m not getting paid either. Because I have.

On the real, any chance I can get to work with ESPN I’m going to take – and run with. It will be a six-hour shift and I report to a Mr. Knight at 8am.

Sure it’s not a real job and I’m not being paid, but who cares. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see how the “SkyCam” works.
