Former Oregon State gymnast Yuki Lamb has been selected as a winner of the 2007-2008 Oroweat “Healthy Minds” Postgraduate Scholarship along with former California swimmer Jernej Godec, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday.
“It’s an honor really,” Lamb said. “There are a lot of great student-athletes in the Pac-10 and I got chosen. I’m pretty excited.”
Lamb and Godec, chosen from a pool of Pac-10 postgraduate scholarship winners, which included 20 male recipients and 20 female recipients, are recognized by the Pac-10 and its corporate partner Oroweat for their overall excellence in athletics, academics, service and commitment to graduate education. Each will receive a $10,000 scholarship for graduate school.
“I start my job in Seattle soon, so I’m not sure when I’ll use the scholarship,” Lamb said. “But I want to go back and get my MBA in the next few years, probably at Washington or Stanford.”
Lamb, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., ended her senior season as a 2008 first team All-American on the vault, the 2008 West Regional vault champion and a second team All-Conference performer. A two-time team captain, she earned career highs of 9.925 (vault), 9.875 (beam) and 9.875 (floor), helping Oregon State advance to the 2008 NCAA championships for the 19th time in school history. A three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection, Lamb was named a 2006 and 2007 member of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Team. “Oroweat is proud to present the Healthy Minds scholarship program,” said Dan Larson, Oroweat’s Director of Marketing. “We congratulate and recognize the special achievements of Jernej and Yuki, and extend the best to all the Pac-10 postgraduate scholarship recipients in their continuing education. In addition to her athletic and academic accomplishments, Lamb volunteered at the English Language Institute, helping exchange students with language translation. She also spent time with Relay for Life, raising funds and awareness for cancer research.
Godec, a native of Ljubljana, Slovenia, was a 10-time All-American at Cal, competing most recently in relay, freestyle and butterfly events. At the 2008 Pac-10 championships, he was a member of the relay teams that placed first in the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay, helping the Bears to a second-place overall finish. A two-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection, Godec is currently a member of the Slovenian Olympic team, competing in the 2008 Beijing games.
Outside of sports, Godec works as a laboratory researcher on campus, studying the immune response to salmonella infections under the supervision of Dr. Gregory Barton. In 2007, he conducted swimming clinics for children in Slovenia, and worked at a non-profit organization in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2006.
Previous winners of the Oroweat Healthy Minds Postgraduate Scholarship include Kal Clark (Arizona State, 2007) and Katy Trotter (Stanford, 2007).
