Dwain Williams, a 6-0, 170-pound guard who played at Providence College the past two seasons, has signed a financial aid letter of agreement with Oregon State, head men’s basketball coach Craig Robinson announced on Tuesday. Williams, who will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out next season due to NCAA transfer guidelines, is expected to enroll in summer courses at Oregon State in July.
“We are excited to have a player of Dwain’s caliber come to Oregon State,” Robinson said. “I had an opportunity to coach against him at Brown and I came away very impressed. He’s a talented guard and is the type of player who can provide an immediate impact and can help us build as a program.”
Williams lettered for two seasons at Providence College. This past season he averaged 11.0 points per game, third-best on the Friar squad, while adding 2.3 assists per game. He shot an impressive .902 (46-51) at the free throw line and .407 (48-118) from three-point range.
In Big East Conference games he averaged 13.0 points and 2.1 assists per game. Williams appeared in 21 games, starting 17 times. He scored in double figures 10 times, including a career-high 23 points at Connecticut. He also had 21 points at Syracuse, and 20 points against Notre Dame and DePaul.
During his freshman campaign, Williams appeared in 25 games, starting four as he averaged 7.5 points per game. He shot.440 (37-of-84) from three-point range as he led the team in three-point shooting percentage.
A native of San Diego, Calif., Williams attended Vista Murrieta High School where he averaged 28.6 points and 5.6 assists as a senior in 2005. He was a four-year varsity letter winner and earned ABCD Camp All-Star honors twice. In addition, Williams received first-team all-state honors all four years of high school.
Before arriving at Providence, he attended IMG Academy in Florida in 2004 and was ranked as one of the top recruits in the nation.
