Brendan Ziegler, OSU SPC staff wins title

Brendan Ziegler, an assistant on the Sports Performance Center staff at Oregon State University, captured the men’s division title at the 17th annual Oregon Weightlifting Classic Saturday at the Casanova Center on the University of Oregon campus.

Ziegler cleared the most weight in the overall competition for the second year in a row, combining for a total of 300 kilograms (661 lbs.) in the two phases of competition. He successfully lifted 132.5 kg (292 lbs.) in the snatch and 167.5 kg (369? lbs.) in the clean and jerk to place first in the 105 kg class.

“My next goal is to qualify for the national championships,” Ziegler said. “I nearly made it last weekend, but missed on my final lift. I hope to qualify in my next competition this winter.”

Ziegler just completed his second year on the staff at OSU, working mainly with the football, men’s basketball, softball and golf teams. Professionally, he has also spent one year at the University of Hawai’i, two years at the University of Wisconsin and had a stint with the Chicago Bulls.

The native of Edgerton, Wisc., Ziegler is a 2004 graduate (exercise science/biology) of Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., where he lettered four years in football as a defensive lineman.
