ASU cheerleaders suspended

According to thedirty.com and many other news sources (FOX, MSNBC, ESPN) there will be no cheerleading at Arizona State University games next season due to photos that have leaked to the internet.

wowThe girls (at right) had photos taken while posing in their underwear. When those pictures surfaced on the internet ASU decided to halt all cheerleading the following season.

The school’s athletic director, Lisa Love, made the decision Thursday evening. Proving the meaning of team, although only six members of the squad were shown in the photos, the entire squad of 16 will suffer the consequences.

The cheerleaders told MyFOXPhoenix that “the photographs were a result of college kids goofing off, and they believe the decision to disband the team has been in the works for a while. The photographs are two years old, and were taken at a cheer party.”

A lot of schools have attempted to drop cherleading from the athletics departments. Other Pac-10 school, Oregon State attempted to cut cheerleading just two years ago. The move did not work and after two years of a “spirit squad” the team has returned.

The long term fate of the Arizona State squad has yet to be determined.

This is not the first time ASU has dealt with “sexual content” from their cheerleading team. In late 2005 the team had to deal with Courtney Cox. Cox decided to star in multiple adult films. In one, wearing her ASU cheerleading uniform.

In the meantime, the ASU cheer squad is left scratching their heads.

ASU cheerleader Briana Barcelo told MyFOXPhoenix, “It’s just good timing on [thedirty.com’s] part I guess,” Barcelo said. “And now it’s been all taken away.”
