Live From The Emerald Bowl: First Quarter

Orange is the overwhelming color in the park tonight, making it appear not unlike a Giants home game.

OSU won the coin toss, and elected to defer. On the opening drive, Maryland QB Chris Turner demonstrates an ability to throw the ball. . . something that I didn’t expect to see this early in the game. Maryland draws first blood, taking a 7-0 lead after an 11 play 80 yard drive. On the positive side of things, the beavers appear to be effectively neutralizing the potent Terrapin rushing attack.

Lyle Moevao comes out looking slightly rusty in the first drive, completing 1 of 2 passes, and almost getting picked off. After a 3 and out, Alexis Serna is forced to punt, but a Maryland personal foul keeps the drive alive. Moevao appears to be injured as he leaves the field holding his wrist. James Rogers has a phenomenal start to the game with his now-famous version of the fly sweep, picking up a cool 16 yards, and catching a blistering 14 yard TD pass from Sean Canfield in the endzone. 7-7 Tie Game .

Maryland returner Ralph Scott has a good return on the kickoff, bringing the ball back to the 38. Boy do the beavers defensive ends look great so far, and Dorian Smith in particular. Maryland 3 and out.

Lyle Moevao comes back out on the second beavers drive. The second attempt at the fly sweep is good for another first down, with Rogers gaining only 12 yards on the play, however the Beavs are unable to continue the drive. The Serna punt is returned to the Maryland 20 by Anthony Wiseman, who is massacred by a grip of OSU tacklers.

Maryland reveals their speed on a 63 Yard Touchdown Reception by receiver Darrius Hayward-Bey. The third longest TD reception in Emerald Bowl history. 14-7 Maryland.

Sidenote: During the singing of the National Anthem, there was some guy in the crowd singing awfully. . . and awfully loud as well. His voice was distinctly heard in the pressbox, eliciting restrained laughter from the media corps. Classic.

  1. Hey Chris (sounds like a Fall Out Boy Song),

How bad does the o-line look from your perspective because on TV it is bad. And tell Nick the new challenge is what will we see more, Diamond/Emerald Nuts commercials or Friegens Chins.

  2. I imagine more chins then nut commercials because they cut to the coaches after every play…

  3. Truthfully, he has a multitude of chins. I don’t know if they are countable. As far as the O-Line goes, It appears that there are some miscommunication issues from up here. . . I’ll get a better take as the game moves along.
