Late Wednesday evening Judge Susan Nelson entered an order denying the NFL’s motion to stay the injunction pending appeal to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, meaning as per her Court Order, the lockout is lifted immediately.
While the players contend that the new league year begins right away, the owners are still delaying the start of a new league year as long as possible. However the longer they wait to allow business as usual to commence, the more and more likely it is that the NFL will be found in contempt of a federal court ruling.
In the meantime, early Thursday morning the NFL filed a request with the Eight Circuit Court of Appeals regarding Nelson’s ruling. The league requested three things from the appeals court:
1.) An expedited appeals process
2.) A stay of injunction until the appeal is heard
3.) A temporary stay of injunction while they rule on #2.
NFL Spokesman Greg Aiello stated Thursday morning that the league will operate in the status quo for now, making the statement: “Clubs notified last night they should continue to follow the current rules and practices until otherwise advised by our office.”
