Just a link for all of the readers. The Seattle P-I, has a piece on an incident that turned almost violent Friday at Gill between a few OSU hoopsters and a couple of Huskies at the end of UW’s practice. An Excerpt-
…”A UW practice had just ended and Oregon State players were passing through the arena when they spotted Huskies freshman guard Venoy Overton laughing and shooting while providing a loud, running commentary of presumably the game at hand.
“What are you doing talking like that in our house?!” screamed the Beavers’ Sean Carter, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Fayetteville, N.C., making a move out of the shadows toward Overton under a basket.
Five other Oregon State players were behind Carter, most notably Marcel Jones, who yelled out his own explosive objections.
Overton gave it right back, making everyone edgier.
“This is awesome!” remarked UW forward Jon Brockman, seated in the stands with an ice pack wrapped around his injured groin, before sensing that things might escalate.
The “N” word was repeated several times by Oregon State‘s offended players. All were African-Americans. Overton kept chirping back. Carter was gesturing. People appeared ready to fight.
“Let’s go, (blank)!” Carter challenged, taking a hard step toward Overton.”…. (read article)
[…] Intelligencer ran a relatively biased “report” of the incident (you can find a link to it in this story). The report stated that the Beaver players started a confirontation with a few Huskies after […]
Thankfully the game was brawl-free thanks for the heads up.
I don’t have enough new information for a column on this, nor was I at the game. However, this is disgusting. Mouton thinks it’s normal for young men to crash a Pac 10 practice, spew racist remarks, and then later harass an opponent with threatening voice mail (and a purported hotel visit)?
Maybe the coach also thinks its normal, or perfectly alright for that matter, if his team doesn’t win a single Pac 10 game.
I don’t feel bad holding Mouton partially responsible for Jay John’s mistakes. He was and remains a key player in the administration that utterly drove Oregon State basketball into the ground by taking a bad situation and making it worse. Recruiting and playing athletes of this character is indicative of the desperation in Gill over the past several years.
Point is, the players responsible for this (assuming basic factual accuracy of these reports) are almost as big an embarrassment to the university as the program itself.
