Memphis has fired head coach Larry Porter. He posted a 3-21 record during his two seasons leading his alma mater. The university announced Porter’s dismissal Sunday morning in a release.
The final straw leading to Porter’s dismissal was a 44-7 thumping at the hands of Southern Mississippi on Saturday. The Tigers ended the season 2-10.
Other reports say that the lack of fan interest was what led to Porter’s dismissal. During the last few home games only a small percentage of the stadium was filled – in the finale, an estimated 2,500 fans showed for the game against Marshall.
Porter was the running back at Memphis from 1990-93 and was eventually hired on Nov. 29, 2009 as head coach. He replaced Tommy West after a 2-10 season.
Porter’s claim to fame was five years he spent on the LSU coaching staff under Les Miles.
