Thursday afternoon Miami’s football program announced it received a $4.2 million gift. The donation will help fund scholarships and is the largest donation ever made to the team.
The kicker? It came 35 years after it was promised.
The donation was made by the estate of department store heiress Mary B. Hecht. She died in 1982. University officials said the gift could not be made until the recent death of the income beneficiary of Hecht’s estate.
In a statement, Miami President Donna Shalala said Hecht was a “passionate supporter” of the Hurricanes and “now her generous legacy will help future generations of student-athletes.”
Miami is currently battling allegations of improper benefits to multiple football players from former booster Nevin Shapiro. The team opens it’s season at Maryland on Monday night.
