North Carolina’s Thorp regrets NCAA violations

North Carolina is in trouble again – albeit not as bad this time. North Carolina chancellor Holden Thorp announced Friday that he regrets seeing th eTarheels break another NCAA rule.

Recently, football coach Butch Davis discussed a scholorship offer he made to his son.

Thorp talked to the local newspapers, The News & Observer of Raleigh and The Charlotte Observer, and said he was disappointed.

Apparently, Davis offered his son, Drew Davis, a scholarship without consulting Thorp or athletic director Dick Baddour.

Drew Davis plays quarterback for East Chapel Hill High School. And he is a senior. And he hasn’t signed a letter of intent. NCAA rules prohibit discussing recruits who haven’t signed a letter of intent.

Butch Davis was fired last week and in a statement Friday, Thorp said the school reported the infraction to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Thorp said that “cumulative damage” to the university had been the cause for his removal.
