Ricky Rubio is joining the Minnesota Timberwolves – officially.
After posting on his twitter account that he was planning on making his decision, the 20-year-old Spanish guard ended two years of speculation on Friday.
“I have finally decided to start the journey,” he said to reporters.
His journey includes a move to the NBA.
“It is my dream and I want to fulfill it,” he told reporters. “After thinking about it a lot, the time has arrived.”
Recall the Timberwolves selected Rubio with the No. 5 pick in the 2009 draft even though he played for another team in Europe. The T’Wolves drafted him not certian if Rubio would ever actually play in the NBA because of a $6 million buyout clause in place by the European team he played for at the time.
Minnesota took a gamble on the phenom who has won every conceivable European basketball award since his debut at 14 years old. Ironically, the year of his decision to move to the NBA, he struggled and lost his starting job.
Chances are he won’t lose his starting job on the Timberwolves, who were an NBA-worst 17-65 last season.
