Washington Redskins facing quarterback controversy – already

It can’t be real, but it is. There is only one team in the NFL that could manage to have a quarterback controversy in the middle of a lockout. The Washington Redskins.

Okay, maybe the Seattle Seahawks, too.

Right now though, the Redskins have a problem. As the old saying goes, if you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have any quarterbacks.

The ‘Skins have three quarterbacks, I’m not sure how to do that math.

Donovan McNabb, who was benched in favor of Rex Grossman at one point (read: knowing when your career has hit rock-bottom), made an appearance at a charity event in D.C. on Wednesday and, according to The Associated Press, joked that he might not be coming back. Saying maybe he’ll play for baseball’s Washington Nationals as a way to stay in the nation’s capital.

Then there is Sexy Rexy. Grossman said on a sports talk show and said he “definitely” feels like he’ll be the starter next season. Keep in mind, Grossman is a free agent. And bad. Very bad.

Grossman has only won more games than he’s lost once in his career – when he QB’d the 2006 Chicago Bears. And he wasn’t exactly Slingin’ Sammy Baugh for the Monsters of Midway. In fact if you take away that 2006 season Grossman is 7-12 with 4,000 yards passing and 17 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

Then there’s John Beck. Beck recently joined 106.7 the Fan in Washington D.C. with LaVar Arrington and Chad Dukes. He was a phenomenal guest.

Some of the better excerpts:

“Donovan is a stud in my book and he always will be but it doesn’t change the fact that I needed an opportunity to be a starter and the only way I was going to get it was a situation like this. So now I have an opportunity and I’m trying to make the most of it.”

“Well if you’re asking me I always believe that I can win and I always believe I can be the guy.”

“I think it comes down to just understanding that it takes skin like an armadillo to be a quarterback in the NFL. I don’t know exactly what D.C. holds. I know a little bit from last year but that was just one year. No matter what organization you’re playing for in the NFL, if you’re the quarterback of an NFL team you have to shoulder a lot of responsibility, you have to shoulder a lot of blame.”

Beck has been killing it in the media lately. He seems to be pretty convinced – in his own head at least – that he is competing for the starting job as well.

Then again when you are battling an aging McNabb and Rex Grossman it’s hard to argue that you’re not.

Heck, I’m sure even I’d have a shot in that locker room.
