Radford University men’s basketball coach Brad Greenberg resigned late Thursday afternoon.
The move isn’t as surprising as the timing – even with the speculation of his firing rumbling beneath the surface for days.
During his four seasons at the small Virginia school, Greenberg was 55-68 overall and 35-33 in the Big South. His best season was the 2009-2010, the team went 21-12 and made the NCAA tournament – he was even named Big South Coach of the Year.
This past season, the Highlanders were 5-24 overall and 2-16 in the league.
On top of his mediocre performance this past year, the 57-year-old was suspended for four games in February for NCAA violations stemming from “impermissible team travel” and “extra benefits” given to an ineligible player. Greenberg admitted to the violations involving Masse Doumbe, a French native and a transfer from a U.S. junior college, according to The Roanoke Times.
The university announced the resignation on its website, saying a search for a replacement would begin immediately.
Radford Assistant Athletic Director Joey Beeler told The Associated Press Thursday night he could not comment on Greenberg’s resignation. Athletic Director, Robert Lineburg, issued a statement Thursday saying: “we will be extremely thorough and hire the right person to lead our student-athletes in the classroom, in the community and on the basketball court.”
For Radford, it might be tough to lure the right coach so late in the game.
