Carl Lewis running for New Jersey Senate

Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis is apart of a different kind of race. This time, he running against someone he knows he could beat in a footrace.

He is planning to run for New Jersey Senate.

Lewis said Sunday night that he planned a news conference Monday.

Monday morning word from the state’s Democratic Party was that Lewis will officially announce his candidacy. However, the “word” came on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press hoping not to upstage Lewis’ plans. Of course, Democratic Assemblyman Herb Conaway also told The Philadelphia Inquirer that Lewis was in negotiations to run for the state Senate in the Eighth District yesterday.

According to the AP:

Lewis has called a 2 p.m. news conference in Burlington County to announce his “political plans.” Monday is the filing deadline for anyone who wants to run for the New Jersey Legislature and all 120 seats of the Senate and Assembly will be on November’s ballot. Both houses are controlled by Democrats.

Lewis is most famous for his Olympic career. He was the world best long jumper for nearly two decades – winning four-consecutive Gold medals. He won four Gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, alone. He then defended his 100-meter title in Seoul in 1988 after Ben Johnson was stripped of the medal for doping.
