Ramsey, Auburn players reveal “pay-for-play”

The troubles for the Auburn program are going to be on the front page again. Four former Auburn players told HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” they received thousands of dollars “while being recruited by or playing for the Tigers,” according to the Associated Press.

The players: Stanley McClover, Troy Reddick, Raven Gray and Chaz Ramsey came forward in the show that is set to air Wednesday night.

McClover had previously committed to Ohio State University before he changed his mind. Chaz Ramsey was choosing between a handful of SEC schools and finally chose Auburn.

Ramsey was injured as a Sophomore and didn’t return to the team.

“They treated it as a business,” Ramsey told al.com in 2009. “I guess you could say. When people get hurt, they move on. They’ve got their own jobs to think about.”

He had his lawsuit against a former Auburn trainer dismissed in February of 2011. At the time, he planned to appeal.

Ramsey, once a promising offensive lineman who made the All-SEC freshman team, claimed he reinjured his back in 2008 due to mistakes by Arnold Gamber, Auburn’s trainer at the time. Ramsey suffered a career-ending injury while doing weighted exercises he said shouldn’t have been in his plan while rehabbing after back surgery.

“They use you and abuse you and throw you away,” he told ai.com.

Auburn declined comment on the accusations on the HBO show.

None of the players was on last season’s national championship team.

McClover told HBO he received money from an unidentified Auburn booster and that he was paid $4,000 after a four-sack game against rival Alabama. Reddick and Ramsey said they were paid up to $400 after games and Gray said he received $3,000 from someone during his recruitment.
