The Top Ten
Certainly, Duke is Duke, they’re on TV more than Leave it to Beaver reruns
Most likely, No. 4 Duke won’t be in the Top 5 next week and probably lost the No. 1 seed in the ACC tournament when they lost to No. 14 North Carolina 81-67 at Chapel Hill. Harrison Barnes scored 18 points and Kendall Marshall had 15 points and added 11 dimes. The win put UNC on game ahead of Duke in the ACC Standings.
The No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks won their seventh-consecutive Big 12 regular-season title and finished the year 29-2. No. 22 Missouri tried, but couldn’t hang on in a 70-66 loss. Kansas’ Marcus Morris scored 21 points and pulled in 10 rebounds to put a seal on the regular season while Thomas Robinson added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Poor BYU. As if it didn’t suck enough to live in Utah already… No. 3 BYU had a “tumultuous week” (Brandon Davies was kicked off the team for breaking the school’s honor code) but managed to finish on the up-swing when they handed Wyoming a 102-78 loss. BYU standout Jimmer Fredette led the way with 38 points only three days after an 82-64 loss to New Mexico.
No. 4 Pittsburgh can add another Big East regular-season title to its’ mantle. They beat No.19 Villanova 60-50.
The No. 1 Stunna
Purdue was hoping to grab a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament but that No. 6 ranking is in jeapordy after Iowa upset the Boilermakers 67-65. JaJuan Johnson had 22 points and 12 boards for Purdue but as a team, the hot-handed Boilermakers went just 5-for-25 from 3-point range. Even worse, the loss gave the regular-season title to Ohio State.
Back in the Big 12, No. 7 Texas beat Baylor 60-54 with the help of Tristan Thompson’s 19 points and 13 rebounds. Baylor’s LaceDarius Dunn scored 22 points to become the Big 12’s career scoring leader in the loss.
No. 8 Notre Dame sneaked by No. 16 Connecticut 70-67. Irish leading-scorer Ben Hansbrough didn’t even finish the game and still had 21 points (he fouled out with eight-minutes to go). UConn’s Kemba Walker, who scored 34, missed a 3-pointer for the win with eight seconds left.
The Aztecs of No. 9 San Diego State beat Colorado State 66-48 to finish 29-2 in the regular season and will share the Mountain West Conference title with BYU.
Wisconsin held on with the help of Jordan Taylor’s 39 points and beat Indiana 77-67. The No.10 Badgers play Ohio State Sunday at 4pm EST.
