Baseball loses oldest living legend

It’s a sad day in the world of baseball. In an era of free-agency, arbitration and hold-outs, the league has lost something more important that a contract negotiation.

The oldest living major leaguer died today. Tony Malinosky was 101.

He was an infielder with the Brooklyn Dodgers for three months in 1937. He batted .228 in 35 games before his career was cut short by a knee injury and his service to the country – he served in the Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge according to the AP.

The Los Angeles Dodgers released a statement saying he died Tuesday in Oxnard, Calif.

Malinosky was honored at Dodger Stadium during the 2009 season when he turned 100. The team says he remained a Dodgers fan his whole life.
